Schools before High Rises: Necessities before Amenities

23 Jul 2019 5:30 PM | Diane Atwell (Administrator)

On Tuesday July 23, 2019 at 5:30 PM, the City Planning Board will be presented with what is one of many development plans for the area lying north of Hamilton Park between 10th Street and Hoboken (Soho Lofts, Acme, Home Depot etc).   Already, there are more than 4000 additional units that have been approved/built just for this area, and yet, there are NO PLANS for a PUBLIC SCHOOL, GREENSPACE, LIBRARY and PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION.   And in total, approximately 8,100 units can ultimately be built here!  Specifically, in one version of a development that would be allowed in this area, the developer is asking to build an enormous high rise with potentially more than 900 units and .5 parking. Where will those families send their children to school, where will those children play and learn, and where on earth will they park their cars?

While we agree with City Council that there must be affordable housing in the Jersey Avenue Light Rail Redevelopment Plan, we also believe that the City should include planning for these basic infrastructure necessities as well.  The density that can be built in this area requires that the City build a school/park/library.  As such, the proposed amendments to the Jersey Avenue Light Rail Redevelopment Plan are inadequate.

Join us at City Hall, City Council Chambers, Tuesday, July 23, 2019 at 5:30 PM to voice our objection to continued development without the provision of these basic civic necessities.  In addition to showing up, write an email to our City leaders.  If you cannot join in person, please write an email to Councilman James Solomon, Councilwoman at Large, Joyce Watterman, City Council President Rolanda Lavarro, Councilman at Large, Daniel Rivera and Mayor Steve Fulop and tell them that you oppose further development downtown until schools, parks and public transportation are planned for and set in stone.

Current Proposed Amendment to the Jersey Avenue Light Rail Redevelopment Plan - Going before the Planning Board Tuesday for their recommendation.  HPNA agrees with the affordable housing provision, but the Amendment is incomplete as it does not address the need for additional public necessities to support the proposed density.
